Upon John Ringling's death in 1936 he left his art collection and estate to the people of the State of Florida. The stewardship of the museum and estate was transferred to Florida State University in 2000. The Ringling's European travel kindled a passion for art and collecting. Beginning in the 1920s John began purchasing masterpieces by Rubens, Titian, Velazques, Hals and Gainsboruough.
