Our site... it was only us and 1 other camper in the campground. RV park has good utilities and internet service with nice sized sites.

Frank Lloyd Wright's "Rosenbaum House"

 The Rosenbaum House is a single-family house designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright and built for Stanley and Mildred Rosenbaum in Florence, Alabama during 1940. 

This is the side of the house that faces the street and is considered the back of the house.

Frank Lloyd Wright freed Americans from Victorian “boxes” and revolutionized art and architecture. He was born just two years after the Civil War and died two years after the launching of the satellite Sputnik and is considered to be America’s greatest architect. Originally built for $12,000 as an affordable, middle-class home, the house is the only Wright design open to the public in the southeastern United States.

Usonian" is a term usually referring to a group of approximately sixty middle-income family homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright beginning in 1936. The "Usonian Homes" are typically small, single-story dwellings without a garage or much storage. They are often L-shaped to fit around a garden terrace on unusual and inexpensive sites. They are characterized by native materials; flat roofs and large cantilevered overhangs for passive solar heating and natural cooling; natural lighting with clerestory windows; and radiant-floor heating. A strong visual connection between the interior and exterior spaces is an important characteristic of all Usonian homes. The word carport was coined by Wright to describe an overhang for sheltering a parked vehicle.

In 1938 newlyweds Stanley Rosenbaum and his wife Mildred were given a building lot and funds to build a house in Florence, Alabama. The Rosenbaums took up residence in September 1940

The house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. It remained in the Rosenbaum family until 1999 (when Mildred Rosenbaum moved into a nursing home), longer than any of Wright's other Usonian clients. By this time the house was in poor repair, with extensive water penetration and termite damage. The Rosenbaum family donated the house to the City of Florence and at the same time sold the furniture and contents of the house to the city for $75,000. The city spent a further $600,000 on repairs, using original plans sent by the Wright Foundation

Helen Keller's birthplace is located in Tuscumbia, AL, where Helen's father was the publisher of a weekly newspaper, an attorney, and farmer.

The birthplace cottage is east of the main house and consists of a large room and playroom.

Candler Hills Ice Cream Social

We have always been out of town and missed the Candler summer Ice Cream Social. But this year they decided to have two, so we got to join in the fun.

The event takes place in the ballroom at The Lodge.
